re: #180 MacDuff

It seems that today’s popular culture seems to be nothing more than a reverberation of that of the Baby Boomers, updated to fit current times.

I loved Star Trek, and I plan on seeing the movie(s), but are there any original ideas out there in movieland? It seems to be that all of the really big blockbusters have their roots in Boomer culture.

I’m saying this as a Boomer and one who is familiar with that time, warts and all. While I enjoy a lot of this rehash, at some level, it’s somewhat troubling.

Just my humble opinion…….

And is that any different than the past? Really. How many movie “franchises” did we have in the past. Abbot and Costello, The Marx Brothers, Olsen and Johnson, Laurel and Hardy, The Universal monster movies, Francis the Talking Mule, Blondie and Dagwood movies, and many of these moved on to TV (and started on radio).

And even before that, Sherlock Holmes books and of course, many book series, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and I could go on and on.

No, I don’t see anything new about the way the entertainment business markets their product, the foundational idea haven’t changed much for 75 years.
