Yes, it was human beings, and that’s the point. Interpretation of sect A is not more correct than that of sect B unless you happen to be a member of sect A.

All one could argue is that someone has deviated from classical/traditional/historical interpretations of a particular religion (e.g. Mormons from historical Christianity; Protestants from historical Christianity; Catholics… well, you see where this leads; it’s also highly contextual). “Historical” != “one true” (or do we hold that the modern liberal versions of Christianity are objectively false and heretical, given how strongly they deviate from the historical Christianity? It’s a double-edged sword.)
