I wonder if he’s starting to feel the heat from Mastodon. The default character limit to “toots” (Mastodon equivalent of tweet.) is 500 characters, but individual Mastodon servers can configure that limit higher if they want. As a result, I’ve seen the occasional single post on Mastodon that’s more the equivalent of a blog post than of a tweet.

Also, if Tumblr are serious about adding support for ActivityPub, (The protocol underlying services such as Mastodon) then their posts probably won’t have 500 character limit either.
