The ideas put out in Gaffney’s article make me think of the novel that I’m currently reading. One of the main characters is a financial fraudster who comes to Britain from Europe. People speculate as to his religious beliefs, “accusing him” of being Jewish (it’s set in Victorian England when it was ok to think like that) then deciding that he’s a staunch Protestant and then a Catholic. The ambiguity is deliberately cultivated by the fraudster who is also standing for election to parliament and who wants to gain as many votes as possible.
Hmmm…that sounds like Anthony Trollope? Is it The Way We Live Now? (Just sounds familiar.)
