All of them were power-hungry radicals, just like the humorless radicals who have taken over the name of conservative (a movement that arose in the 17th century in reaction to the Civil Wars, later reinforced by the excesses of the French Revolution). I don’t think Anymouse was referencing Pol Pot or Stalin or Robespierre. There has been a lot of genocide out there done for a lot of reasons.

Genocide to preserve a racial supremacist ideal or to secure colonial hegemony, for example.
