The Stanford Experiment shows how fast normal humans descend into disgusting behavior. The original experiment was slated to last for one week. They shut it down when they discovered that sadism and sexual abuse were rampant.

Oh another interesting thing about the Stanford Experiment— Zimbardo himself got so into the role of ‘warden’ that he didn’t realise the experiment had gone too far and needed to be terminated until another psychologist—an outside observer— had a tour of the prison on the 6th day.

Same thing with Abu G; the whistleblowers had to come from outside the culture. It starts looking normal to the people involved in it.
