I was watching a documentary called “Searching for General Tso” (after whom the chicken dish is named) and it pointed out that the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 made it illegal for Chinese to take on most wage-paying jobs, so many of them opened laundries and restaurants.

Resulting in the No Tickee No Shirtee Act of 1886.
