Now Gus, you know we can’t do that. Why, the auto manufacturers will lose money because they’ll be building cars that nobody wants! And they’ll be smaller and less solid, meaning more deadly crashes! America simply can’t afford to save gas by raising CAFE!

Higher mileage, better built and much safer. One of the greatest urban myths is that old cars were safer. Most of what you see in the old cars is just sheet metal with nothing behind it. When safety standards began to be adopted in the USA back in the 60s we heard similar complaints like we see now about CAFE standards.
