The ‘being the alpha’ part is absolutely true. This is why so many little dogs (what we call ‘Snack Dogs’) are such terrors - their owners don’t establish dominance. They think they don’t have to, and they end up with a dog that snarls and barks at everyone. But if you like big dogs, and I do, you make sure they know who’s boss. 80# of pure muscle and teeth acting like that would be A Bad Thing.

I have a 27 pound terrier who will not break of his desire to eat any human that comes into the house, except for the people he knows live here, that he was introduced to when he arrived. He was an older shelter dog with a very iffy background. I am certain he was abused.

No matter what I do (and I would put myself just below expert in dog training), he will not break of that. He is better than he used to be, but he is always in a crate when anyone comes over.

And he knows that I am alpha in the house.
