re: #193 HappyWarrior
You know, I’ve been thinking about that whole idea that wingnuts have that in the good old days immigrants assimilated and learned English. As you guys know, I’m a genealogy nut and my family’s unofficial historian. I found out yesterday by digging up an old obituary that my great great great grandmother spoke nothing but Gaelic despite living in the US nearly 60 years. I thought that was pretty damn neat honestly. that she was a Gaelic speaker. Makes me said though since anyone who would have known her has been gone for quite a while and it appears she had quite some notoriety in her ward. My grandmother never knew her.
One of the benefits of growing-up in a major metropolitan area instead of corn-land is that many of my classmates had grandmas and grandpas that spoke other languages. Their kids and grandkids seemed to pretty good at American English.
