I think I’ve told this story before… but a long time ago in a college far, far away, I had a philosophy professor who suggested that the big problem we moderns face is that we don’t know what do with all our free time.

That is, post industrial revolution, production capabilities are such that many people won’t need to work that much for their necessities.

So if we are satisfied with a full stomach and clothes on our back, we don’t need to spend all our day working.

This idea of surplus time is one of those things I think economists and philosophers could go ‘round and ‘round and not really get anywhere.

I suspect that our basic human drive is to be higher on the totem pole then are neighboring human.

So we are never satisfied with what we have, if someone else has more.
