I know I’m living on native land which belonged to the Catawba people prior to whites settling here because it’s been documented in the history of this county and their fights with Cherokees, also, over settlements along the now named Catawba River. It’s a comforting thought, actually. I can imagine they might have even lived on the very land I’m on, since it’s very close to a small creek and there is a huge aquifer in this area that has supplied water for wells here for centuries. The land is fertile and was farmed not just by the Catawbas (who were agriculturalists) but up until recently when housing developers started moving into the eastern part, on the lake (man-made by damming the river for Duke Energy power plants in the 1960s) and the farms started being sold off.
