re: #124 Kragar
“[Grant] stood by me when I was crazy, and I stood by him when he was drunk; and now, sir, we stand by each other always.” - W.T. Sherman
I knew about Grant’s drinking; know less about Sherman’s craziness (?). That, despite knowing a direct patrilineal descendant of Sherman’s. Wonderful, warm-hearted lady, who worked with immigrant kids in San Diego.
And then, every once in a while, something would come up that was unjust & unfair to kids, poor folks, or immigrants. And this gentle, loving woman would get an unholy light in her eyes, and a buzzsaw note in her voice. Her shoulders would square and posture stiffen. Basically, full-on combat mode: engaged.
Guess there were some characteristics that persisted through the generations.
