In two censuses, one of my mother’s grandmothers showed up as Colored in the federal census and mulatto in her state one. From family records, she was Black Seminole, Florida Cracker and Ashkenazi Jewish.

My father’s mother, who supposedly had enough Cherokee blood quantum to be listed on the Dawes Rolls (dunno whether or not she was) was listed as “mulatto”. Her state did not implement their one drop law until 1913, when she would have been a young adult, but I sincerely doubt they reissued any birth certificates when they did.
