Interesting suggestions. I’m more into board wargames and there aren’t all that many appropriate to the age bracket involved. If they had serious interest, there’s a few good historically accurate games that are on the simpler end of the spectrum. At that age, though, a good chess set is an investment in how to think.

I used to be involved with FallCon in Calgary, and one of my roles was working at the Comic Entertainment Expo teaching people new games.
I play some wargames (I loves me some C&C: Ancients) and I have been playing the Martin Wallace ACW games from Mayfair, Bull Run & Shiloh. These are pretty light but fun.
I am a big fan of the block stuff from Columbia & GMT as well.
