I think our biggest mistake in the last decade has been overestimating the openness of a large portion of white America to racial and cultural diversity, and to equality. And we underestimated the importance of white identity not only in the US, but internationally. We euphemistically call it ‘White Nationalism’, but really it’s international.Trump’s base feels like they have more in common with Eurofascists than with their nonwhite neighbors.

I think that’s a great point. We definitely did do that domestically and internationally. We on the left like to see Europeans especially in Western Europe as being more enlightened but they’re just as suspectable to this crap as we are.
