Sorry DF I’m going to have to disagree, I feel there is no surer way to end up abandoning democracy, or at least anything making democracy worthwhile than to shy away from fair and open trials of those who are believed to be guilty. To just sweep percieved slights under the rug will only further polarize the sides as they each believe the other is getting away with something horrible.

Well, I do see things differently, but I see your point. This one is one of those issues that is a judgement call: both course of action have costs and benefits and neither is the course of an angel nor that of a demon.
