Exactly, they played politics badly. They spent the first 2 years making sure a good crisis didn’t go to waste. If you want to continue winning and advancing your agenda you have to bring in more than just your own constituency. Neither party can win a majority based solely on the votes of their own party members.

Clinton managed to get re-elected after getting his ass handed to him in ‘94 because he was still able to advance his agenda by not over-reaching. If you care about your parties “Issue C” you better make sure you take care of the majorities “Issue A”.
