In 1976 we were sitting in Union Square in SF, a good size group of our class at Control Data Institute, smoking weed. Two SFPD motorcycle cops drove into the middle of the square and got off their bikes and came up to our group. I had a roach up to my lips on a 1 meter alligator clip multi-meter cable. I tossed it and tried to cover it with my foot, a large red wire sticking out and a lung full of pot. Cop says, What’s that under your foot?” I said, “Nothing.”. exhaling a big cloud of smoke into his face. He made me show him, asked if we had any more, I said, “No”. Hr said, “get rid of it”, so I shredded the roach.

He said it wasn’t worth the paperwork to arrest us. He asked who we were and we told him we were CDI students. He said, “I hope you never have anything to do with any computers I ever have to deal with.”

I went on to a career in computerized traffic signal control systems.

The new year happened and the law to decriminalized weed went into effect and a woman in the following class got caught and was issued a citation. she was with us the first time, too.
