Yglesias puts too much stock in Vermont elections, as if the rest of the nation will react like the residents of that (small) state.

Sanders has yet to be hit hard by the right-wing attack machine. They will take every criticism that Sanders has made of Israel, and tell the masses of Americans that Sanders hates Je$u$ (because Israel = Je$u$.)

Sure, that won’t work here in California, but again, the election outcome does not turn on California because Trump can’t win here no matter what.

But in highly religious states - and all the swing states are highly religious - it will matter.

People moved by those kind of attacks are already Republicans. Sanders is the candidate best positioned to expand the Democratic electorate by turning out a record youth vote, who are much less religious than older generations.
