Seriously though, much as I’m loathe to admit it, there’s a certain blood lust people have when it comes to this sort of thing - nastiness is seen as a sign of strength and dominance, while taking the high road is interpreted as being a wimp and a wuss (see the original Swiftboat smears: “durr hurr, he won’t defend himself against false accusations, so how can he defend America from the terrorists herp derp”)

Of course, if you can successfully ridicule and humiliate the nasty person without being nasty yourself (a rare skill) that’s seen as a “win” as well.
