Do people really not understand the difference between a “public accommodation” and a private group? Can they see no difference between “I’ll serve this item to you, but not to him” and “I’m sorry, we don’t have that item so we don’t serve it to anyone”?

How much of this is failure to think it through, and how much is willful ignorance?
