To give an example, suppose I write:

Scientist Richard Dickerson also says that it is hard to see how polymerization could have proceeded in the aqueous environment of the primitive ocean, since the presence of water favors depolymerization (Scientific American, September 1978, p. 75.)

Does that mean I actually went somewhere and checked the 1978 issue of SA? No, it means I just cribbed this from a Jehovah’s Witnesses’ tract.
