i think it’s the assumption that if your traveling at interstellar speeds, you better have inertia dampeners because all a seat belt would do is cut you in half…..

It just makes no logical sense to assume that the system can’t be overloaded or taken offline by some unforeseen event. Hell, just regular combat in some series and movies turns a starship’s bridge into a pinball machine. And we’ll not even go into the pathological fear of surge protection that turns control panels into bombs.
