At it’s miltaristic worst, Japan attacked American miltary targets, not civilians, not children. Harsh, brutal and ruthless yes…..but honorable in it’s choice of targets nonetheless (I am excluding the China incident of course). The same cannot be said for Iran.

The imperial Japanese military did horrible things to western civilians (including Americans) in Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines etc… Where ever they went, they committed atrocities against non-combatants.

They relocated and imprisoned American Alaskan civilians during their invasion of the Aleutian isles, and kept them in horrid conditions leading to a quarter of them dieing while imprisoned.

They were seldom if ever honorable in their choice of targets. They targeted hospitals, and would torture and execute the defenseless patients and entire medical staff when they overran them. They targeted and did whatever was necessary for them to be victorious. Many of their actions were terrorist in nature.

As others have commented, it was the utter defeat and destruction of their militaristic belief and political systems that enabled the path to a peaceful modern Japan. Similarly, Iran will never progress or be peaceful until its militant belief and political systems are utterly destroyed. That is what is occurring in Iraq, but it is still not complete.
