I think we could well see a resurrection of the US auto industry in the medium term future, but it will consist of a) Ford, and b) one or more companies that do not yet exist (or are barely on the radar).

There are all those plants out there sitting idle and a few major brand names suddenly available, but who would be able to make a go of that? I’m sorry to see Pontiac go, I always loved their style over the much simpler looking Chevy’s. Ford seems able to continue, provided the UAW doesn’t screw them too badly, and this development seems to indicate that they may do just that. I expect Ford to do something if the UAW is suddenly a major competitor.
