As an atheist, I can assure you that I know that prayer is useless, either for good or for evil. You need not invoke the triumph of the anti-religion crowd to warn against cursing (praying for death). Cursing, blessing, chanting, whirling - all the same. Religious fundamentalists praying for death is very different from committing murder in the name of God. The first is irrational, the second criminal. But either way, God has nothing to do with it. Human beings are moral or immoral actors whatever the justification for their actions.
I also know that there is no winning the argument between believers and atheists.
