re: #167 Fenway_Nation

Makes a great argument for railways as a matter of fact. I’m not sure what the ratio in Poland and elsewhere in Europe would be, but one boxcar is thought to take the equivalent of three trucks off the road. The less trucks meandering through the narrow surface streets of various small towns, the better- but then again, the rail infrastructure there could be in just as woeful shape as the highways.

I think this company has holdings in Poland.

Not only that. It’s really hard to beat the low frictional losses you get from steel wheels on steel rails. Train transport is inherently energy efficient. I’d love to see a comparison of how much fuel it takes to move a ton 100 miles by truck versus train.

As you point out, though, it isn’t a complete solution. There are major trunk lines available for rail shipment, but you still need lots of trucks to bridge that final gap between terminal and destination.
