I often wonder, if the coasts were reversed and the Pilgrims had landed in SoCal during a drought, if they would have stayed.

The east coast reminded them of Jolly Old, so they lucked up. Even as far south as GA, Scots and the English took to the coastal and mountainous areas. It was the interiors that weren’t much to their liking, with the hot, humid weather, but perfect for working slaves, in their opinion.

If I recall correctly coastal South Carolina was (is?) pretty swampy. So it was farmed for rice and indigo, and also went through labor very quickly due to conditions.
