Rid? No, but we did heavily regulate and (for the time) heavily tax them. The National Firearms Act of 1934 required the registration of the weapon and payment of a $200 tax (~$4000 today) with only one amnesty in 1968. A similar amnesty and registration would be necessary, legally, in any attempt at restricting the AR/AK class of weapons beyond California levels.

But the reality is that any one with the money can own a machine gun. Follow the rules & have fun. We need to make that ethic apply to AR/AK weapons as well.
