I think it is a waste of time.

Wish we had a real interlocutor to ask tough questions, and when the candidate answers, not let them get away with vague references but make them back up their statements.

Agreed but American politicians generally don’t speak off the cuff or gice unscripted answers. It’s all a carefully scripted advertising campaign. I don’t think the public would respond positively to honest unscripted answers.
