shit like this is never that black and white. that is the trouble I have with “hate crime ” legislation, even though I support the principle:

For example: suppose a black gang member kills a white gang member (or vice versa) in the course of a botched drug deal that goes astray when one side or the other utters a racial slur…Is that gang violence, drug violence or a hate crime?

I was thinking more along the lines of “Guy gets drunk and does something really stupid and hurts himself, then makes up a fake hate crime to cover up how stupid and drunk he was”
