My friend says the same things about how churches and private organizations should be a safety net.

Never mind that these organizations never go out and help minority communities. I learned that in Colorado Springs. A city of 500k+ took in less than 100 Internally Displaced Persons from Hurricane Katrina.

None of the Christian Organizations raised a finger to help. None of the ones I saw in the city, anyway.

It was at least a contributor to my eventual conversion. Especially combined with how Islamic Relief went out and did a lot of stuff.
