Nope. One of my Marketing professors would point and laugh at them over this idiocy. It’s a rookie level mistake. You can’t give away your product for years then expect people to pay for it later.

They’re hoping that they’ve got enough of their readership hooked on consuming a product a certain way that they can now charge them for that delivery method. The hardcore junkies, bloggers, mobile professionals, and similar will probably pay for web access if they can sweeten it with some extra goodies (kindle access, part of their regular newspaper subscription, etc).

I hope it works. The newspaper model is broken right now, and the Times is in the most advantageous position to fix at least their iteration of that model. If they fail, newspapers are doomed.
