I think one thing people don’t get about I-10 in the West is that in between Los Angeles and San Antonio, a distance of 1,350 miles, there are three big cities: Phoenix, Tucson and El Paso and one decent sized town, Las Cruces (100,000 people). It’s empty as hell outside of the cities.

This. The inner mountain west is to this day very empty and sparsely populated, especially in the Four Corners states and the borders of Mexico and Arizona/New Mexico. No mans land.

FYI, if you’re driving in the Colorado Plateau or the Sonora Desert (and for that matter the Mojave Desert as well), keep you gas tank topped off.
