Hell, I know they were. The Ottoman Empire decriminalize Homosexual Activity in 1858. 6 years before our Emancipation Proclamation ended Slavery in the US, and 145 Years before Lawrence v. Texas would decriminalize Homosexual Activity here in the US.
The Ottomans are an interesting bunch. It’s my understanding that the empire was pretty Jewish friendly by the standards of the day. I don’t really too much about them but I do know a bit about the history of the Jews in the Russian Empire given that I did my term paper on pogroms from 1880-just before WWI.
