I still remember that horrible “Project for a New American Century” document that came out in the Bush years.

The foundation of the new Pax Americana.

Unlike the old one which (mostly) tried to make sure that our allies were on board when violence at an international level was needed the new one was, “Follow or get out of the way.”

In my mind Iraq was meant by the neo-cons as an object lesson for the rest of the world. “This is what happened to people to get in our way. You may hate as long as you also fear.”

It was straight out of the Hollywood vision of the Old West. A gunslinger walks into town, shoots somebody and announces, “There ain’t no law in this here town ‘ceptin’ what I say there is.” Because that was the main thrust of Iraq, to overturn international law and replace it with American rule, forever. Richard Perle made that very clear.
