He first asked for donations via the Donate button on his blog.
I remember some people complaining that his Donate button didn’t work and/or they hated Paypal, and he tried a variety of crowdfunding schemes.
I think he just made up the “I raised $10,000” claim.

Someone here said he tried Bitcoin, but didn’t know how to set it up.
