The audience is supposedly “undecided voters”, you know—morons. Half of the questions are supposed to be spontaneous.

They’re not “spontaneous”. There’s a handout at each seat for people to write what their question would be, and somebody associated with the debate producers picks through them and tells the moderators who to call on.
