Bashing the Jewish faith has a long and ignominious tradition in Christianity whenever people or governments needed a scapegoat for their problems.
One of the great failings of Martin Luther was when he made his break with the Catholic Church, he could have also broken with the anti-Semitism. Instead he doubled down on that, and Germany was primed by it for someone like Hitler to take advantage of it.
