I find the cropped photo actually is much more powerful in conveying the fear of the commando and results in a much more powerful reaction than the first. If the intention is to support a pro-activist narrative I find it does the opposite.

Except without the knife in frame, then the question becomes “Is he really afraid of them?” The argument would be raised that he was in fact afraid of others who were attacking him, but those in the shot are there to protect him. By taking the knife out of the picture, you give the room to argue that this is actually a picture of mercy on the part of the “activists” than proof of just how dangerous they truly were.
