It’s always been my understanding that “modern-day Israel” was created by a bunch of collectivist, socialist, primarily eastern European, largely secular Jews.

Was I not paying enough attention in Hebrew school all those years ago?

Theirs is an Imagined Israel for which Actual Israel is an inconvenience.
