When you start trying to go with political entities that are 1 or more steps away from the problem, the link gets harder to define and explain, much less to mobilize ppl for since you now have a couple dozen or more nations all contributing to the Gulf states that then feed into Sudan.
1985: Boycott South Africa! Easy to understand
1985: Boycott France and Israel for selling arms to South Africa! That’s a much harder case to sell.
“Boycott US universities for investing in companies that do business with Israel” is, apparently, not a hard sell.
(It actually is, the demonstrations were loud and shiny, so they got lost of coverage, but they didn’t really attract large numbers.)
