Wow, the amount of denial in these comments is incredible. Facts — in 1959, there were 37,910 vehicle fatalities in the US. In 2009, there were 30,797 fatalities. HOWEVER, the miles driven in 1959 were 600 million, and in 2009 there were 3 BILLION miles. In other words, you were 6 times more likely to die in an auto accident in 1959 than in 2009, per vehicle mile. That is a staggering statistic that you just can’t rationalize around.
