With opposition like this I think our great grand kids will be debating the ongoing provisions of the “temporary” Patriot Act. Rational opposition can’t get traction in this atmosphere.

Agreed. Which is the reason I think the libertarian connection here is unsurprising. “libertarianism” has bee a dumping ground for crackpots and bad ideas since the 40’s. They might as well be ranting about the military-industrial complex.
