Saw a trepanation exhibit at the Smithsonian a few years back. It was often used to allow “bad spirits” to leave the body. Think schizophrenia. They had one poor guy’s skull that looked like chicken wire. Must have been a hardy soul to survive having thirty, quarter-sized chunks of his skull taken out over decades.

I can’t imagine how that would have felt, just don’t have any kind of a frame of reference, like if you told me that gold melted at 2000* F I don’t have a reference for that, other than HOT. Same thing, to have a hole drilled in the skull. Next time my doc goes “This may sting a little bit” I figure at least he’s not using scraping my skull open with a sharpened stone.
