One report I heard was that during the remodeling during the past 2 years a “skin” was added to the exterior of the building to improve the appearance. If there were no “fire blocks” between floors then the skin would act like a chimney and move the fire rapidly from the second floor to the upper levels.

Here’s an image of the layout of Grenfell Tower; four-bedroom units, four to a floor and you’ll notice only one emergency stairwell. In a 24-storey building.

A disaster waiting to happen.
