Goodman is the devil, and flames burst along the walls as he runs.

However, it wasn’t necessarily him. In a world with the devil running loose, there might be other dark things around.

It could have been Fink, in a moment of madness, and it could have been W.P. Mayhew.

Interesting ideas. I suppose it was supposed to be sort of an open question with no correct answer.
