Another thing is to rent one of those shampooers with two metal tubs (soapy water and dirty water) and use the power of the suction to soak up the carpets. Them do the humidifier and fan bit. But get up as much actual wet as possible.

Kitty Litter does a good (cheap) job of absorbing. Silica gel is much better, but harder to find. If all fails, Habitat for Humanity “ReStores” often have dirt-cheap new laminate and carpeting.
