Teachers in Texas aren’t already paid $76000 per year on average, like Chicago teachers already were when they went on strike.
(Oh, and let’s do keep in mind that that $76000 figure was, indeed, the correct number. The average. Notwithstanding skepticism at this site.)
When you’re underpaid, there’s more of a case to be made for a big raise than when you’re already making money that’s rare in your line of work.
